Why Are Your Instagram Hashtags NOT Working? Hashtags Still Work but Only When Used the Strategic Way

From my perspective: for me and my clients hashtags still work but only when chosen the strategic way.

Now you may want to ask: okay, now I know alot about keywords and how to use them but about hashtags? Should I still use them? Do they still work? Should I even bother with hashtags at all?

My protip? Use low volume keywords that don’t have such huge competition and they really can give your posts a visibility boost. 

How to find hashtags that still work? First, we need to analyze their search volume 

For those of you who aren’t familiar with this term:

Search Volume tells you how many people are searching for a certain phrase, certain keyword.

And if you want to use third-party apps it’s also beneficial to analyze hashtags’ potential reach. There are a few tools that let you analyze these metrics, I use IQ Hashtags because I know this tool from their very start, and I even collaborated with them, because I really trust them, but from what I know a few different tools also help you analyze hashtag search volume and hashtag potential reach, but they are a bit more expensive, like Flick or Slay.so

I will show you the process with IQ Hashtags tool because I’ve been using this tool on a daily basis for more than 3 years and it works for me and for my clients, so let’s go, here’s the process of analyzing hashtags we want to use:

Is Instagram Lowering Your Reach?

Hashtag Competitiveness

Hashtag competitiveness lets you know how often a particular hashtag is used in other creators’ content. How competitive it is. 

A perfect hashtag has low competition score and high potential reach, which means it can give you high visibility but at the same time it isn’t too popular, because there’s this huge risk with too popular hashtags: too many creators use them and your post will instantly disappear in the flood of other posts in the Hashtag Explore Section.

So it’s good to stick to hashtags that don’t have a high competition score. For example for a keyword ugccreator, suggested hashtags look like this:

So as you can see we can choose many hashtags that have a medium competition score, which is more friendly for accounts that don’t have a million followers.

Hashtags’ Potential Reach 

This is the second metric that is worth analyzing, and as I’ve already told you, here we look for hashtags with medium or high potential reach, as they have the higher potential to give our content a visibility boost. So for instance these three hashtags look good and it should be difficult to rank high with them. They’re the strategic choices.

Many parts of the way Instagram algorithms work are still a mystery and Instagram team has never revealed any details about them, but we know for sure that there are at least 4 different algorithms, and these are:

1) Feed Algorithm – This algorithm shows posts and Reels based on the user’s interests and activity. The rank of your post can be also impacted by:

  • Image and video quality
  • Originality
  • Reported Content (reported content rank much lower)

 

2) Stories Algorithm – This algorithm prioritizes Instagram stories from the accounts that you interact with the most.

Instagram stories are ranked based on your:

  • Viewing history
  • Engagement history
  • “Closeness” with the account

 

3) Explore Page Algorithm – This algorithm delivers content based on all your latest interactions and interests. The content you see in your explore section is displayed based on the history of your likes, shares, and saves.

 

4) Reels Algorithm – This algorithm is in charge of sorting and prioritizing Reels. Some key points that are really important for this particular algorithm:

  • The quality of Reels
  • Relevant keywords included in the content (or in captions)
  • On-screen captions added

Do you know what can be the reason behind this serious issue? I’m worried about my Instagram reach down lately, and I’m trying to understand the reasons behind it.

“Yeah, I went from getting 80k-200k views to around 2000 to maybe 9000 views. I thought I was going crazy and something was wrong.  I swear Instagram changes up the algorithm every month”.

That’s just one of the hundreds of worries we hear every day. This feeling of helplessness that there is nothing you can do to boost your numbers and you’re at the mercy of the Instagram algorithm is the worst. We know it ourselves. But don’t worry at all! Knowing what to do when your Reels views drop is a matter of understanding how the Instagram algorithms work, the main reasons why views and reach might drop, and the safest ways to get more views to reach your new, potential followers.

That’s what we’re here for today.

 Why are my Instagram Reels not getting views? Why don’t my Instagram posts reach anybody? Instagram reach down – what might be causing it? There are a few main reasons for low view counts. Let’s take a look at them. Then, we’ll talk in detail about how to avoid these issues. Let’s go!

 

Instagram Reach Drop: Is Instagram Getting Oversaturated? 

I’ve heard this theory more times than I can count. Well, of course the amount of active creators is also one of the 100 reasons that lead to lower reach. The popularity of Instagram itself has its pros and cons. As Instagram provided a platform and tools for artists, creators, and aspiring influencers to showcase and develop their influence, talent, and skills, its popularity and the hype soared high in the sky. It means a cutthroat competition for likes, views, and attention! But competition and the high number of creators is not the only reason behind the Instagram reach drop; there are many other reasons, too. So, let’s look closely at those reasons and find out how you can fix them to get your high organic reach back up.

 

Instagram Reach Down. Why Did My Instagram Reels Stop Getting Views?

First, let’s focus on the Reels format. Your new Reels will get most of their views within the first 24-48 hours on Instagram. That’s the amount of time Instagram actively promotes new Reels, pushing them to the top of the search, suggested Reels, and explore section.

Of course, for some Reels that take off, that get hundreds and thousands of views and shares daily, that’s more to the algorithm than this “freshness factor”.Instagram’s algorithms are complex systems that determine the visibility and ranking of Reels and static posts on the platform. 

They use various factors, such as user engagement, relevance to new, trending topics, and relevance to the individual user, to determine which Reels are shown to users in their Reels feed. The platform aims to maximize user engagement and keep users inside the Instagram app for as long as possible.

If you are not getting as much engagement (likes, comments, shares, saves) as before on your Reels, it can lower your content’s visibility to others on Instagram.

First and foremost, you need to keep in mind who your target audience is when brainstorming your new post ideas.  What are they TRULY interested in? What kind of content do they typically respond to?

If you already have an Instagram presence, it should be easy for you to analyze it, find this information. Your hooks aren’t engaging enough 

 

I’m sure you’ve heard it before: the first 3 seconds of your Reels are crucial. If you can’t grab your potential followers’ attention in 3 seconds, you will probably lose them forever.

So, it’s worth ensuring that your hook (verbal or visual) is extremely engaging and captivating. Sure, sometimes you pick the clever and sassy one, and sometimes it’s just an attention-grabbing statement. Either way, it needs to invite people to finish watching your content or reading your post/caption.

Your content is too long

As the attention span of most Instagram users is limited (as they also use TikTok and their brains are being bombarded with impulses), it’s EXTREMELY important to get your point across really quickly. Even Instagram recommends that Reels should be ideally around 15-20 seconds long.

Without a compelling and exciting beginning, you can’t make a good engaging Reel, even if the video is ultra creative and top quality.

The first 1-2 seconds of your Reel is called a lead part which is the main idea about the Reel. Without an excellent hook, it’s really challenging to create an interesting start.

A compelling and attention-grabbing first second multiplies the way ‘Gram users engage with your Reels.

The hook element has to be brief, creative,  specific, and intriguing. Tell them what the Reel will be about. The hook can also be closed or open-ended questions – it’s up to you!

Keep Their Attention

Essentially, when someone starts watching your Reel, they either consciously or subconsciously ask themselves these 3 questions:

  • Does this Reel intrigue me, do I feel like keep on watching?
  • Is this Reel entertaining?
  • Is this Reel teaching me something?

Your Reels and their captions are super important for your potential followers and future customers – hey, they won’t know what your amazing biz is all about if you don’t communicate it efficiently in your content. 

Don’t just sell, document your story along the way – make it relatable, and don’t be afraid to show the human side of your business.

My advice? Create a personal brand around yourself, nourish an emotional connection with your audience, document your daily life (and show it in your Reels!), and create a business that simply can’t be compared to others.That way, you will give your followers a reason to keep coming back over and over again to your profile.

What Is The Perfect Length of The Reel?

People have short attention spans, so shouldn’t we create shorter Reels?

Yup. People do have short attention spans – they really struggle to keep 100% focus throughout the video. 

It’s no secret that Instagram prioritizes Reels, especially the ones with high engagement and high watch time. Ya know what the ‘Gram really  loves? Original content. Reels that are being watched to the very end.

My advice? Turn your expertise, your creative concepts and opinions into juicy, Reel-rich content for your profile, but try to keep it short and sweet. Research shows that the optimal length for most Reels is 7-10 seconds.

Know Your Audience – Analyze Their Behaviors and Tendencies

A well-researched, data-informed strategy is the key to any business’ success on Instagram– which also makes it the key to your potential followers’ hearts.

That’s why I believe it’s really worth it to invest in a GOOD Instagram analytics and research tool.

This is one of the biggest mistakes I see in Reels. So often, creators will talk about what matters to them, which in many cases is not what matters to their current audience.

My advice? Don’t take yourself too seriously, and share different parts of your daily routines – to make your content more relatable and entartaining. That way everybody will find something for themselves.

Mastering your Reels takes time and effort, that’s true. I always tell the creators and business owners I work with to work within their budgets, and to spend the time, energy and budget they have on the activity that will get them the highest return (the famous ROI). Creating Reels is a slow win in many cases, which can take months to have a truly significant impact.  But… I’m sure your business needs Reels.

My pro tip for you to level up to MAXIMUM REELS EFFICIENCY would be to take a morning or a day where you have great lighting, or maybe even book out a small studio, to take a whole gallery of amazing videos you can use for your Reels throughout the rest of the month or year. Taking a burst of videos in one go will mean your lighting, color scheme, video quality and composition are pretty consistent, and it can be a really smart move.

Instagram Reels is one of the newest Instagram features that allows users to make 15-90 second video snippets, set to music and publish them to their Feed, and the new Reels page on their profile.

The new Reels Explore Feed is Instagram Reels’ equivalent of the Tiktok’s For You page. The Reels feed may be found on the Instagram Explore Page. Instead of seeing Reels from accounts you follow as you scroll, you will instead see Reels from prominent and trending Instagram accounts. That’s really intriguing!

While the Reels algorithm hasn’t been finalized, it appears to be comparable to the TikTok For You page. It’s most likely impacted by people you already follow, the stuff you interact with, and your location. 

Interesting fact? You may notice that certain Reels have a “Featured” designation above the text as you browse. “If your reel is featured in Explore, you’ll receive a notice,” Instagram says. Featured reels are a collection of public reels hand-picked by Instagram to help you find original material that we hope will entertain and inspire you.”

Select Reels from the Instagram camera’s bottom menu. On the left side of your screen, you’ll notice a selection of creative editing options to help you construct your reel, including: 

  • Audio: Browse the Instagram music collection to find your tune. You may also use your own original audio! When you share a Reel with original audio, your audio is credited to you, and if you have a public account, users can make Reels with your audio by selecting “Use Audio” from your Reel – that way, it’s a really cool idea to encourage more people to use the song you’ve created.
  • Timer and Countdown: Use the timer to automatically record any of your clips. When you push the record button, you’ll see a 3-2-1 countdown before recording for the time you specified begins.
  • Speed: Select whether to speed up or slow down a portion of the video or audio. This might help you keep time or create slow motion films.
  • Align: Before filming your next clip, line up items from your previous clip to assist create seamless transitions for situations like outfit changes or adding new people to your Reel.
  • Augmented reality effects: To record several films with different effects, choose one of the many effects in our effect collection, which were made by Instagram and producers all over the world.
